Olympia, Washington state’s capital is your next break. Visit the State Capital where Washington’s territorial, formative statehood and contemporary years are examined through permanent and rotating exhibits. Be sure to check out the Delbert McBride Ethnobotanical Garden, displaying Northwest flora that has been used by generations of Native Americans as food, tools and medicine. Centralia, Washington is home to the largest Factory Outlet shopping center in the state when you get to Centralia - it’s so big it’s on both sides of the freeway.
When driving from Portland, OR, go back in time with the Oregon Historical Society Museum. Absorb the rich history of the Oregon Trail and the people who traveled it. The Oregon Zoo is where you’ll find lions, giraffes and zebras, and you can even enjoy a trek through the African Rain Forest.
Cannon Beach is a beautiful spot to stop and have a picnic. You can explore Haystack Rock, the most photographed monolith and sea-life refuge on the Oregon coast. Go a little further and you’ll find Tillamook Head Lighthouse, located between Cannon Beach and Seaside on Tillamook rock; its light first shined in 1880. It is now a federal wildlife refuge.
